Homes in the Texas Hill Country
I'm Josue Mayfield, MRP, a licensed Texas Realtor and U.S. Marine Corps veteran with Big Bexar Realty Group, brokered by Real Broker, LLC. I live in Boerne, and I help buyers and sellers in San Antonio and throughout the Hill Country.
The Hill Country covers a lot of ground. This page gives you a simple overview of the region's geography, a few well-known public places, and how I can help if you're buying or selling here.
About the area
"Hill Country" is the everyday name for a region of Central Texas that includes all or part of about 25 counties. Much of it is a dissected limestone plateau of rolling hills, river valleys, and live oak and juniper country. The Balcones Escarpment forms its eastern and southern edge, which is why the land rises noticeably as you drive northwest from San Antonio. Elevations run from under 1,000 feet in the south and east to more than 2,500 feet in the west.
The region includes many towns. A few are:
- Boerne, the Kendall County seat, on I-10 and Cibolo Creek
- Comfort, farther up I-10 in Kendall County
- Kerrville, the Kerr County seat, on I-10 and the Guadalupe River, about 62 miles northwest of San Antonio
- Fredericksburg, on US 290
- Johnson City, where US 281 north from San Antonio meets US 290
There are well-known public places across the region. Guadalupe River State Park, between Boerne and US 281 off Texas 46, has the Guadalupe River running through it. Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park has two sites, one in Johnson City and the LBJ Ranch near Stonewall, about 14 miles apart on US 290. North of Fredericksburg, Enchanted Rock State Natural Area is known for its large pink granite dome and about 22 miles of hiking trails.
Highways link the whole region. I-10 runs northwest from San Antonio through Boerne, Comfort, and Kerrville. US 281 heads north to Johnson City, and US 290 runs east to west between Johnson City and Fredericksburg.
